How about creating a new saved search that includes extensions for all the attachments you receive minus gif.
You will probably have to switch between searches with and without attachments. But you'd have to do that anyway to sort out mail with and without attachments.
Then again, you could create a confederated search with these two mail searches, one without and one with attachments.
I have no idea if that would work. I haven't tried it. It is just a top of the (mostly empty) head thought.
I say create saved searches because the hard wired ones, if that is what you use, may not allow tweaking like that.
Not sure that excluding gif from indexing would help. It would prevent X1 from trying to index the content of those files, but probably not their existence.
