Irrespective of the slowness of the download of the full installation program (which for me is not a problem), if the existing version of X1 is running while trying to install the X1 8.2 beta, the installation of X1 8.2 beta will cancel and it is necessary to re-run x1searchsetupbeta.exe and download the full installation program again.

What is more bizarre, Outlook was also running but during the installation of X1 8.2 beta I was given the opportunity to close Outlook. Why one and not the other?
