Cannot update or setup 8.1

I waited before trying to updating/install 8.1 until X1 posted their message at 11.45.

However, I can neither update or install the new version of X1.

Trying to update
In X1 8.0.1 clicking on Menu/Help/Check for Update, a window appeared saying that update to 8.1 was available.

Clicking through the windows to launch the setup program I have repeatedly got the following (Microsoft?) error message:

Trying to install

Then I tried to install via this method posted by X1.

I uninstalled version 8.0.1, ran X1searchsetup.exe. I saw the screen asking whether I wished to accept the X1 licence agreement and clicked on OK/Agree.

From that point nothing happens (ie no other windows appear, nothing is showing in Task Manager (nothing in the Applications or Processes tabs). I have tried on several occasions and let 10-30 minutes between each try (in case X1 is downloading the main setup program), but still nothing.

At present I have lost X1 completely as I understand it is not possible to return to 8.0.1.

What should I be doing?
