The way I discovered that Thunderbird was causing my startup problem may be of help for other issues as well. I used a utility Process Monitor (not process explorer). See Windows Sysinternals http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx.
The amount of information that is collected may be overwhelming and to detailed. But just by scanning the output, I noticed what was happening in my case: While starting/crashing X1 opened thousands of Thunderbird files.
