Column sizing can be a pain. I try to avoid the issue by creating saved searches with different columns visible to match what I am doing and where the files are on my system.
Many columns have little use in most circumstances. I just get rid of them. This applies to the columns I used to set up the saved search. For example, if I am searching for PDF files, once I have set up the saved search I c an happily eliminate from the display for that search the column that restricts the search to PDFs.
I then size the key ones and leave it at that. I rarely have to make major changes.
