Thanks for the suggestion. In fact today I got another popup telling me of the upgrade and this time it worked! 8.3.3 successfully installed now. I had previously tried to find any x1 or Outlook processes and kill them, but it did not resolve things.
In the intervening period I had finally managed to get a working installation (several install/reinstalls) and now have 705k emails indexed and it tells me it is up-to-date on email. However, on my old PC linked to the same combination of mailboxes I used to have 1.1m emails indexed.
Well I'm happy on the one hand, but troubled on the other...
