Windows hangs on shutdown as X1 writes its data

A regular occurrence here – every month or so – is a refusal on the part of Windows to close down. It won't do so because it claims that X1 is writing its indexes. But looking at task manager nothing is happening.

I have left Windows for hours to see if it will close. Nope.

I just had to force Windows to close and to abandon X1 mid stream

Sometimes after this I can't start X1, it just throws an error and says goodbye. I can understand that, but it is really down to X1 not to provoke this forced shutdown in the first place.
