Modifying standard search filters, such as "Documents"

Hello all,

We may just agree to disagree. Yes, Saved Searches can be used, BUT in previous versions of X1 (at least 6.7.4) ... you COULD over-write the built in search filters, such as "Documents" if you wanted to. You were NOT prevented from doing this. And, I agree that others have made similar postings, and there have been some postings about adding or removing different picture types for the picture category before. But these previous postings did not provide a transparent workaround ... other than using saved searches, which is not transparent.

With the current version of X1, you can NOT redefine the default filters ... and if you created your own saved searches for Documents, email, pictures, etc with different names... the navigation pane and favorites section will get very cluttered, especially since there is no way to "hide" the built in search filters.

The analogy I like to use is Microsoft's default "normal.dot" template for creating default Word documents. Yes, there is a built in version, but you can augment it to reflect your preferences. Yes, you could create a named template and save it, but then you would have to specify this alternative name every time you wanted to create a file. You would then need to do the same thing with PowerPoint, Excel, and so forth.

So ... I was not complaining about X1. I was describing a change in behavior, and I expended the effort to research and identify a workaround that can be used immediately ... and shared this information with others, who may want to similarly customize X1. X1 has many features that allow it to be customizable, such as the ability to add file types for scanning .... modifying the defaults is just another one.

I gave a simple example of txt files, but I use a modified "Documents" filter to also include my Mindmanager and XMind mind map diagrams. Both these programs use an XML format for their files, and X1 has no problem scanning and indexing them. I'm sure other users would have file formats that they would prefer to include in "Documents" also.

If you disagree ... its ok ... just don't use the workaround.

BTW... I myself also use save searches. I agree that they are very useful, especially in software development. I have several saved searches that include the source files of various languages that I work in.

Regards,

Dave B
