Modifying standard search filters, such as "Documents"

Editing X1's array of XML files also lets you do other things that you really should be able to do within the program itself, many of them much more sensible than "fixing" things that aren't broken.

For example, if, like me, you love saved searches – and the "Filter saved searches" feature to instantly get at them – you will end up with a tree of entries in no logical order. They just get added to the bottom of the existing branch. While there is limited ability to move searches around in the navigation tree, you can't reorder them within a branch.

The way to do this is to use an xml editor (or Notepad if that is your thing) to work on the file navigationtree.xml. You can use something like XML Notepad (from Microsoft. Nearly 10 years old but still works) to drag and drop the searches within the tree.

Anyone who wants to work on one of X1's XML files should, of course, keep a copy somewhere safe so that you can retrace your footsteps if you get things wrong.
