The version that is now in beta is really just another iteration of X1 8.X, mostly with additions that won't do much to many users.
I have no idea when 8.3 will land – probably in a month or so from past experience at "tweaks" like this – but I'd guess that it will be quite some time before we see X1 9.X. So is that is your idea of a "next version" it may be some time.
By the way, X1 recommends uninstalling X1 6.X before installing new versions, but some of us ignore them and run the two side by side. (I would not be at all surprised if some of the X1 folks also break the rules on this front.) I do it because they removed some useful stuff. I confess that I don't go into 6.X much these days, but it does not seem to clash with 8.3.
