I was able to resolve the problems I had with X1 v8 on my Win89 64-bit machine.
After some sleuthing, it looked like Comodo might be interfering with the X1 service. I had seen reports that it blocks some services without notifying the owner, which is really annoying. So, I uninstalled Comodo (replacing it with Zone Alarm), and, once I ironed out another wrinkle, X1 has been running fine.
The other problem was that when uninstalling X1 in order to reinstall it in an attempt to get the service running, you have to uninstall all personal data as well and manually delete the folders where X1 was installed; then reinstall. Uninstalling the personal data means that X1, once reinstalled, has to regenerate the index of documents, but that happens quickly.
So, in my case, Comodo was the main culprit, and the folks at X1 have to do some work fixing its uninstaller so the uninstalls are clean. All in all, I am very happy with X1.
