It has to be a really small drive if you also have to keep programs off the boot drive.

The arrival of SSDs has reversed the trend of having ever larger boot drives. Some people can work with a boot drive that is just 128GB. Mine is 256GB.

I have always kept data off the boot drive wherever possible. It makes it easier to maintain manageable and separate backup regimes for the operating system and the data.
