External Drive - Visible, checked but "(not present)"

Using a virtual external drive created by cypherix. Tried clean uninstall (without saving settings), and reinstall using x1setup downloaded today (2013-10-27). Still not working for me. worked great in Pro and all editions prior since i purchased x1. Not working in 8 now. it worked somewhat in earlier versions of 8. It shows up but has the legend: "(not present)" alongside. I've "removed external drive" and "added external drive" and immediately get the "(not present)".

Any thoughts?
