Meanwhile (out of desperation & ignorance) I have deactivated my License.
Interestingly when I put my license details back in, it said "your copy of X1 Search was registered successfully" and that "X1 will now restart in paid license mode". Except that when it does re-open it says "You do not have a license to run this build of X1Search" and demand the License ID and Password all over again!
Clearly something has gone wrong with the licensing function.
