It now detects my external USB drive. With luck it will remember the files when it finishes indexing them, for the nth time.

By promising to index twitter, is this a message or a screen shot during the update? Please provide more info so we can get rid of it.

Good to hear about the USB drive, I know we're doing a second wave of improvements to both USB and Network drives in the 8.1 release, but I don't have my notes in front of me.
